Sometimes I’m asked the question, “ Pastor, how bad is it going to get?” The question is usually stimulated by some sort of tragedy, either a local, horrible crime or something more chaotic where dozens of lives were lost or terrorized.
Sometimes it is in reference to natural disasters or man-made situations like the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Regardless the scenario, the question or the hurt, the searching for answers is the same, where’s the cure to the curse?
I was reading a verse recently in 2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that you always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.” When you read this verse, it is easy to forget that this is a promise from God. It’s not just words recorded, meant exclusively for the Corinthians. This verse opens up a spiritual truth for the people of God. It exposes the grace and hugeness of God. It speaks to His ability to rescue and meet the needs of mankind. The issue is NOT is there a cure, but will I believe in the solution God has provided?
God is able to make “all grace” abound toward you. What does that mean? Grace is: God giving you blessings, favor, kindness that you do not deserve. Sometimes on my home from work I stop and buy the boys some ice cream or Pam a premium coffee concoction. I do this to show my love and appreciation for them. This is an act of grace. God does the same thing for His people. And this grace is not limited. The next line says, “ …that you always having all sufficiency in all things…” ! Wow, God’s grace can be all sufficient in every thing!!!
This is where the bigness of God takes on exponential proportions. Our finite minds are not capable to fully understand the infinite God who loves us, but that does not have to limit us from experiencing His love and grace.
When Paul wrote of this awesome activity of God toward His people, the church was living in the Roman Empire. They were under horrific dictators who persecuted Christians, even to the point of death. Life expectancy for a typical male was 36 to 38. Life and survival was a daily struggle. There was no sanitation or advanced medicines. There were no glasses or contacts for the visually impaired. There were no employment agencies when you lost your job.
However, God wanted His people to know, that He was privileged to their needs and His grace was sufficient. I submit to you, if God was sufficient then, He is sufficient for my life’s situations today. Will you trust God today? Tell Him of what has “cursed” your day, and thank Him for providing the cure. Then believe it.
In His Service,
